WITNESS THE VERY PLACE WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Olduvai Gorge is a deep ravine in Tanzania’s rugged Great Rift Valley. An anthropologist’s dream, Olduvai is hailed as one of the most significant prehistoric sites in the world. It is here that Mary Leakey made an important fossil discovery that would later help to further understanding of early human evolution.
THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND
This dry, rocky landscape was once submerged by a lake that was a busy watering hole frequented by animals and humankind’s hominid ancestors. Today, Olduvai is a geological cross-section of rock beds that date back two million years.
The site houses a small but truly fascinating museum that depicts the excavation process and fossil discoveries and celebrates the area’s paleoanthropological importance.
